Contra Dance
w/ Rachel Dietel

June 6th-27th (4-weeks)

Saturdays at 7:00pm

Cost: $65 per person

Workshop Description:

Contra Dance is a lively American folk dance traditionally performed to bluegrass music, jigs, and reels. It has roots in 18th century English and French country dances, and is often described as similar to square dancing – but much easier!  Contra dances are performed in long lines of couples who interact with each other to perform steps, such as “swing your partner” and “do-si-do”, as they progress up and down the lines throughout each dance.

In this workshop you will learn the basic steps and sequences that are the foundation of all contra dances, along with other common dances typically performed at contra events, including circle mixers, circle waltzes, and the Virginia Reel.

No experience is required - if you can count to eight and know your left from your right, you can contra dance!

Bringing a partner is encouraged, but not required! (Dancers will have the opportunity to change partners multiple times throughout the workshop.)

What to Wear

Casual clothing that is comfortable and allows for free movement (twirly skirts can make certain moves extra fun!). Clean, comfortable, close-toed shoes.
